Science

Science is a core subject within the National Curriculum. It stimulates and excites the pupils' curiosity and is thereby a highly interesting and important subject.

We aim to enable the children to find out about their world by encouraging them to investigate and explore Science and scientific phenomena and develop an awareness of its importance in everyday life; they are taught to utilise their knowledge and skills to interpret information, draw conclusions, apply their findings to new problems and understand the world around them.

Science work follows the structure of the National Curriculum being based on Programmes of Study, Attainment Targets and Level Descriptions. Work is divided into Key Stages and organised into levels of increasing challenge. Key Stage 1 pupils (Pre-preparatory) are encouraged to observe, explore and ask questions. They begin to work together to collect evidence and link it to simple scientific ideas. During Key Stage 2 (Preparatory) pupils learn about a wider range of living things, materials and phenomena. They carry out more systematic investigations, working on their own and with others.

Strong emphasis is placed on group work, facilitating the development of co-operation and communication skills. Pupils in Years 5 and 6 receive specialist tuition in a science laboratory.

In summary, our aims are to:

  • enable pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live, through investigation of that world.
  • ensure the progressive development of scientific concepts, knowledge, skills and attitudes.
  • enable children to work scientifically in a range of appropriate contexts, using a wide variety of materials and equipment.
  • promote positive attitudes towards, and enthusiasm for, Science work in school.
